The Legend of the Green Man

The "Green Man", and occasionally the "Green Woman", is an ancient symbol of rebirth that arose independently in various forms in many parts of the world. 

He is commonly depicted as a face which is made of or completely surrounded by leaves. Branches and vines often sprout from other parts of his face, and these shoots usually bear flowers and fruit representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring.

Depictions of the Green Man have been used as architectural ornaments on buildings since ancient times.
